Feel Ramadan– 25) This easy is Spirituality!

A teacher asked a disciple who came back after abiding with a preceptor to gain knowledge, for about twenty years:

“How much did you learn, my boy?”

“Sir, I learned in abundance. Now, I even have the capability to walk over a stream of water.”

“Oh! Were you wasting all these years to study a silly thing which can be done if you pay 50 cents to a ferry?”

This question of the teacher is indeed a beautiful definition about spiritual wisdom. Many people misapprehend that ‘spirituality’ is a mysterious kingdom confined beyond the bonds and experiences of this world. Islam does not portray any spiritual wisdom, which is impossible to be attained by a common man. Rather, it presents spirituality as a distinct feeling, which would intervene into every instance in the life of a common man, to influence and beautify those.

Even while recounting about the Lord, Qur’an reminds us that anyone can build a close relationship with Him. Qur’an does not describe Allah as the One Who is craving to scourge the sinners.  Instead, Allah is the Most Merciful Lord, who is always ready to forgive to any repenter, for any sin he had committed. Anyone can get closer to Him without any mediator or screen in between. In fact, Islam prohibited any spirituality which cleaves or restricts the bonds between humans. The laws of Islam are very practical at any instance of life, for any person. There is no spirituality in Islam, without addressing the needs of our surroundings, or there is no social responsibility which  is not entwined to spirituality. Only if these two qualities are assembled, a person becomes a complete muslim.

The spiritual scholars in Islam are those who never slip in front of the awful trails of life, however they turn into crying babies as they fall in prostration in front of the Almighty! This is a status, which can be achieved by any. The presence of Allah is a sure reality as much as we are sure that we still have breath. When a person seriously perceives that Greatest Presence, fear Him and expect Him, he eventually turns into a spiritual soul. When we pour in kindness and affection to all living beings, our life would achieve a spiritual magnificence.

We are journeying through the moments where the remembrance and thoughts about Allah need to be prevailed. It’s the season where we give a break to food, drink and whims and implant the snugly thoughts about the Most Compassionate Lord, instead.

Through the verse number 177 of Surah Al- Baqarah, Allah says:

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. (Qur’an 2:177)
